Goodbye to John Hughes

Sorry to hear of the death of John Hughes - and sorry too, that the BBC World Service mistakenly called one of his best fiims 'Fergus Bueller's Day Off' at about one o'clock this morning (a little known Irish remake, perhaps?)

For those of a certain age, the fictitious town of Shermer, Illinois, was part of our mid-1980s teenage years, in particular The Breakfast Club (my personal favourite), Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink (brilliant soundtrack) and the aforementioned adventures of Ferris Bueller.

Weird Science was a bit rubbish though and I'm not sure we can forgive you for writing Beethoven (even under a pseuodnym) or the awful Dennis the Menace.

Yeah, Breakfast Club is my favourite too. The soundtrack on Pretty in Pink is indeed cool.

Teen angst, Molly Ringwald and great soundtracks sum up Hughes...and must admit, thinking back to those heady times does make me all wistful....
